What's the difference between a turbo and a supercharger?

How a Turbocharger Works

A turbocharger uses "wasted" energy to create power. It consists of a turbine and a compressor connected by a shaft. As your engine runs, the hot expanding exhaust gases spin the turbine, which spins the compressor. This forces pressurized air into the engine cylinders.

  • The Benefit: Turbos are incredibly efficient because they run on exhaust gas that would otherwise be lost. They are excellent for top-end speed and fuel economy.

  • The Trade-off: Because they rely on exhaust pressure building up, there can be a slight delay in power delivery known as "turbo lag."

How a Supercharger Works

A supercharger is mechanically driven directly by the engine, usually via a belt connected to the crankshaft. It acts as an air compressor that pushes air into the engine instantly.

  • The Benefit: Because it is directly connected to the engine's rotation, a supercharger delivers instant throttle response and torque. There is zero lag—just immediate power the moment you step on the gas.

  • The Trade-off: Since the engine has to physically spin the supercharger belt, there is a small amount of "parasitic loss," meaning the engine works slightly harder to turn the unit compared to a free-spinning turbo.

What can we do for you?

At RDS Automotive, we don't just build high-performance cars; we keep them running. Forced induction systems are complex, and when they fail, they can cause massive power loss, smoke, and even engine damage.

Located right here at 2528 East Main Street in Lakeland, we provide dealership-level diagnostics with the personal touch of a local performance shop. If your daily driver or weekend toy has lost its boost, here is how we can help:

🛠️ Turbocharger Repair & Replacement

Is your car blowing blue smoke or making a loud "dentist drill" whining noise? These are classic signs of turbo failure. We handle everything from minor fixes to complete swaps.

  • OEM Turbo Replacement: We replace failed stock turbos on all makes and models (Ford EcoBoost, VW/Audi, Subaru, Diesel trucks, and more).

  • Cartridge (CHRA) Swaps: Sometimes you don't need a whole new housing. We can replace the internal rotating assembly to save you money.

  • Wastegate & Actuator Service: Fixing "underboost" or "overboost" check engine codes caused by sticky or failed wastegates.

⚙️ Supercharger Maintenance & Rebuilds

Superchargers are durable, but they aren't invincible. If you hear a rattling sound at idle or notice a drop in boost pressure, bring it to RDS Automotive immediately.

  • Snout Rebuilds & Coupler Replacement: We fix the common "rattle" found in many GM, Ford, and aftermarket superchargers (Eaton, TVS, Whipple).

  • Belt & Pulley Service: We replace slipping belts and worn tensioners that rob your engine of power.

  • Intercooler Brick Cleaning: We clean or replace clogged intercooler bricks inside the blower to lower intake temperatures and restore efficiency.

🔍 Advanced Diagnostics (Finding the Boost Leak)

The most annoying problem in forced induction is a leak you can't see. We use professional smoke testing and pressure testing equipment to find even the smallest cracks in your intercooler piping, boots, or vacuum lines. Stop guessing why your car is sluggish—let us pinpoint the problem.

Why Lakeland Drivers Choose RDS

We understand that a failed turbo or supercharger is stressful. Our goal is to get you back on the road with a car that performs as good as—or better than—new. Whether it's a standard replacement for your work truck or a rebuild for your muscle car, we do it right the first time.
